Ryan Panchoo is the mastermind and CEO of the most inclusive doughnuts in the UK, the award-winning Borough 22, and this year he celebrates a decade in business. The UK’s only gluten-free, dairy-free, plant-based, halal & kosher doughnuts, Ryan is revolutionising the bakery sector, establishing himself as one to watch in the world of allergy-friendly sweet treats.

Ryan has always had a creative streak – his career began in architecture and construction design management. However, in 2011, he began experimenting with foods to address the lack of multi-allergen friendly products available on the market. A complete novice with no prior experience outside of following a recipe in a cookbook, Ryan was determined to create inclusive sweet treats after he found out his two children were allergic to gluten and dairy. His aim was to create something indulgent and sweet that was not only safe, but would appeal to his kids and their friends, without compromising on taste.

In 2014, after several years of researching and testing different baking methods and ingredients, Borough 22 Doughnuts was born! At first, Ryan was baking and selling his doughnuts in his spare time around his full-time nine-to-five job, spending his evenings and weekends baking in his southeast London kitchen and driving across the city delivering doughnut orders to customers who had found him through social media.

In 2017, Ryan’s side hustle became a full-time role, and the brand went from strength to strength, garnering a loyal fan base through social media. Borough 22 is now stocked in Selfridges London and has been a resident ever since, available for nationwide delivery, stocked in several independent bars, restaurants and cafés throughout London, plus available via Deliveroo in London for the freshest doughnuts in the city.

During the last decade, Borough 22 has picked up numerous awards, including winning Free From Product of the Year in 2023 and earning a Great Taste Award. Ryan was also named Pastry Chef of the Year at Be Inclusive Hospitality Awards in 2023 and is a finalist in the 2024 Black British Business Awards. In May 2022, Ryan created the first-ever fried doughnut that is independently lab-certified gluten free, vegan and free from the 14 most common allergens as listed by the FSA.

Handcrafted with premium ingredients, all Borough 22 doughnuts come in boxes of six with two varieties to choose from: ‘fried’ or ‘baked’ with creative flavours such as vanilla bean glazed rings, strawberry lemonade and Ryan’s award-winning plant-based custard doughnuts.
